At Arrowhead Acres we have a responsible, well thought out breeding program.
Most of our sires and dams are born and raised right here. Our adults are up to date on all medical care, including heartworm prevention, vaccines and rabies shots. Grooming is done to each dog on a regular basis.
All of our adults are retired from the breeding program at seven to eight years old. Occasionally, for various reasons, we will have a young adult to retire. These adults are well socialized and friendly. They adjust well from our kennel to your couch.
All of our adults are crate trained and do well on a leash.
Getting them accustomed to your home and family will require some time and energy on your part, but not nearly as long as the time invested in a puppy. Our Westies have been raised with “doggie doors” and this has taught them to go outside to potty. Investing in a doggie door for your home would help but is not a requirement. The use of the crate is strongly recommended and will help make this an easier transition for you and them.
To adopt an Arrowhead Acres Westie you will have to fill out the Compatibility Profile so we can match your personality and lifestyle to an adoptee. When a decision is made for a particular retiree a $100 non-refundable commitment fee will be required. The adoptee is then taken to our veterinarian, and a pre-op physical is done which will help detect any minor health issues that are not obvious. He/she is spayed or neutered. The teeth are also cleaned and pulled as needed. Doing our best to make sure you are receiving a healthy companion. These services usually cost between $250.00 and $400.00. The cost depends on the amount of dental work done and other medical factors. You, as the adoptive parent, pay this fee minus the $100.00 commitment fee you have already paid. It will remain at our veterinary over night. We ask that you pick up your adoptee one to two days after surgery. If the adoptee is being shipped we will wait seven days after surgery before shipping.
When you adopt your Westie from Arrowhead Acres he or she will have had a recent grooming. Along with the registration papers, you will receive a shot record, a current rabies certificate and tag. A starter bag of our brand of food will be provided for you. This will help with the nutritional transition until you can purchase a bag of our brand or a good kibble of your choice. I will be available to help you and your new companion adjust so that you both have a long, loving relationship.
Below you will be able to see and inquire about any adoptees we might have available now or in the near future. If you are interested in an adoptee, please fill out the Compatibility Profile and email us. When you have time be sure and come back to read the letters and view the pictures of our previous adoptees and adoptive parents. Be sure and read all the way to the four Westies on the couch. |

Chadwick, Chelsea, Prissy
We
first became acquainted with Cindy and David's West Highland Terriers when they were know as Autumn Acres. We answered an ad in the Raleigh paper. My husband was not familiar with the Westies, but I had experienced ownership of them in the past and had longed for another one. Chadwick was our first Westie we bought from Autumn Acres. I knew when we bought him I would want a female to go with him, so I had already picked out a name for her, Chelsea. A year after we bought Chadwick we got on the list for a female. They were producing more males than females and were keeping the females for breeding, so Cindy offered us one of her retired breeders. Prissy was a very sweet, docile Westie and immediately stole our heart. We had many funny and heart warming experiences with her learning to be a pet and living in a home, but she was easily house broken and very shortly fit right into our lifestyle. Another year passed and we purchased another female puppy so we got our Chelsea.
They have all blessed our lives and been a joy to be a part of our family. Chadwick is now almost 12, Chelsea is 9 and Prissy at the age of 15 1/2 went on to Rainbow Bridge in September 2002.
We already have our next two Westies named that we plan on purchasing from what is now known as Arrowhead Acres.
Over the past 10 years we have become very close friends with the Ericksons and know their love of the Westie breed and the quality of their dogs.

Sweet Pea - Sophie
Hello, my name is Lucy Sauls, and I would like to introduce you to our two Westies, Sweet Pea and Sophie. They mean the world to us and bring us joy every single day. We got them from Autumn Acres now Arrowhead Acres, owned by David and Cindy Erickson, and could not love them more.
Sweet Pea (the one with the green collar) just turned eight years old and we have had her since she was two. We got her because she was having difficulty carrying her puppies to term and Cindy did not want her to go through this again so she decided to "retire her". The last thing in the world we wanted was a dog in our house. We were experiencing sadness at the time and felt we would not be a good family for any dog, let alone a "retired puppy". Somehow, with the help of Cindy's daughter, Wendy, who felt we were the perfect family for this pet, Sweet Pea ended up in our home to spend a week. Talk about falling in love with a dog, we were mush. She responded to us immediately and was so affectionate and loving. She became a member of our family within a day of her week's stay and we treasure her. We have always referred to her as the "perfect Westie"... we believe it, and that is what is important, right?
Sophie (the one with the red collar) came to us as a much older dog. We wondered if this would make a difference since she was older than our dog, perhaps affecting their relationship. We were concerned about Sweet Pea's reaction to having another dog in the house to share our attention. We did not need to worry. Sweet Pea accepted Sophie as a playmate and they bonded within days, after the initial curiosity wore off. They even find it comforting to rest side by side after a vigorous playtime. We have even noticed how they search for each other when the other one is not in sight.
We do not know what we would do without these precious Westies. They have brought such pleasure and we are sure our lives are extended because of them, and perhaps vice versa. If and when something happens to these pets, we would not hesitate to accept another "retired" Westie from Cindy. She loves her dogs and we will always be grateful to her for letting us have them.

Pat & Katie
We are now enjoying our second West Highland Terrier retiree from Arrowhead Acres. Our first was a male named Buddy and our first dog. He was a sweet, devoted little boy and we loved him so. He lived a good life to 15 1/2 years with us. Two months before Buddy left us, we had the opportunity to get Katie, another retiree from Arrowhead Acres. Katie is a well behaved, sweet natured dog. She is a wonderful house pet, who does not shed and has great behavior habits. She has been a very healthy dog and of the highest quality in breeding. I also got a baby female for my grandchildren from Arrowhead and she is just a delight, with all of the qualities I have mentioned above. I will always be in touch with Arrowhead for Westies for our family and any friends who are interested.

Dear Cindy,
I want to thank you for Sally. She is a beautiful Westie. I know she was retired from having puppies but she is definitely not retired from giving LOVE. We are so happy to have her as a part of our family.
Most appreciative,
Marsha English |

Dear Cindy,
I wanted you to know Ms Grace is doing very well. She has almost mastered the potty outside and she and Westies get on fairly well- once in a while a skirmish but minor as you suggested I kept my cool and let them work it out. All the nieghbors love Ms Grace- she is quite popular thanks so much for allowing me to adopt her.
Kind Regards, Maureen |
